Punta Gorda Police Asking Citizens to Sign up for Code Red

The City of Punta Gorda is implementing the emergency call program  CodeRED®, similar to 911, except in reverse, the police call you instead of you calling them.

This system enables automated   calls to  targeted areas or the entire community in case of an emergency or an urgent situation that requires immediate attention. Examples include natural disasters (Hurricane warnings/watches, fires), man-made disasters (terrorism, chemical spills, gas leaks), search and rescue (missing children, adults or disabled persons), crime (prisoner escape warnings, sexual offender/predator alerts), as well as other emergency situations.

CodeRED® uses a database of phone numbers and addresses to make the calls.  The system can tell whether the call was answered by a voice or an answering machine, and  calls back if nobody answers the first time.

Residents are encouraged to sign up for this important service at http://www.ci.punta-gorda.fl.us/departments/police/codered_main.htm.
