Punta Gorda Redfish Tournament and Festival --- Doggie Dock Diving

Punta Gorda Redfish Tournament and Festival --- Doggie Dock Diving

The ESPN Redfish Cup with all its festivities plunges into Punta Gorda next weekend and along with it ‘Splashing Dogs’ will leap for laurels.

Dock jumping for dogs, “Splash Dogs,” is an hilarious, albeit very serious sport for dogs, and an event not to be missed. Pets compete for distance, diving from a dock into a 25- foot pool. Owners travel with their flying fidos to these events from all over to compete, while amateur pups participate as well.

“Splash Dogs” was founded by Tony Reed of Pittsburg California, as an organization similar to the Big Air Competitions. After discovering that his Black Labrador, Sierra, “took to the water like a flying fish.” Sierra is a star on the Splash Dog circuit, jumping distances up to 20 feet. The sport originated from hunters who would pass the time by seeing how far their dogs could jump across the water from the dock. It's similar to track and field's long jump event, and it is now growing in popularity, with competitions throughout the country.

Last year’s Redfish Tournament winner Duke, a yellow Lab leaped 22 feet, 5 inches to earn first place and a couple of tasty dog biscuits for sure.
