American International College interested in locating a branch in Punta Gorda

Some great news was announced at the Punta Gorda City Council meeting this morning. American International College of Springfield, Mass. has expressed an interest in locating a branch campus here in Punta Gorda.

Howard Kunik, City Manager, requested and received approval this morning from City Council for a Letter of Support for American International College of Springfield, Massachusetts to locate a branch in the City. The college is interested in opening a branch campus in Punta Gorda possibly at IMPAC University. AIC needed approval from the City of Punta Gorda before applying to the State of Florida.

Mr. Kunik noted, when presenting the request, that the City had been interested for some time in encouraging institutions of higher learning to locate in or within the environs of the City.

According to their website, American International College was founded in 1885. Its initial charter was the education of immigrants who were coming to America through New York. Today, AIC is a private, coeducational, four-year comprehensive institution located in Springfield, Massachusetts. While Liberal arts serves as the core of its offerings, the college is organized into schools of Arts, Education and Sciences; Business Administration; Health Sciences (Nursing, Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy); and Continuing and Extended Studies. At this point it has not been announced as to what educational programs would be offered at the proposed branch.
