Punta Gordeans have been practicing for month's now getting ready for a new boating event coming to town this weekend. Starting at dining room and lanai tables, they practiced their oaring. Ultimately, they loaded into the narrow boats. And in some cases they went for unexpected swims. Friends of ours were just tossed into Charlotte Harbor the other day as they practiced for Punta Gorda's New Annual Dragon Boat Races.
Dragon Boats are skinny looking canoes that were invented long ago by the Chinese (see more on Dragon Boats). On Saturday, three boats will race at a time. Blink and you will miss the race -- they are very short. It will be a blast to watch clubs and organizations from all over town crowding into these boats and racing. There will also be food, music and more to make it a true festival.
Races start at 9 a.m. at the marina. Awards will be handed out later in the day. Cheeky Monkey will perform for the post-race party.
