Of the many traditions connected with the Christmas holidays, perhaps none is more treasured and too often now nostalgically remembered than the the exchange of Christmas cards. I recall as a child waiting for the postman to deposit the varying sized white envelopes in our mail slot, watching my mother carefully slit them one by one, and seeing the look of joy on her face when for a moment she reconnected with a past memory or person who on a routine day had been lost to her forever.
Every year Punta Gorda brings back this holiday tradition in a gigantic way by blowing up the traditional greeting cards into giant-sized replicas that adorn the path of one of Punta Gorda's parks. This year because of City plans (that were subsequently changed) to reconstruct areas of Gilchrist Park, the lane will be in Laishley Park. The cards prepared by local professional and amateur artists and graphic designers represent the collective gift of community organizations, churches, businesses and others to the residents of and visitors to Punta Gorda.
Sponsored by the Punta Gorda Kiwanis, Christmas Card Lane is one of Punta Gorda's many fun Christmas events you will not want to miss. The Christmas Cards are judged and winners are awarded in several categories. Winning cards will then have ribbons displayed on the card. Christmas Card Lane will be on display in Gilchrist Park from December 3 through January 7.
