This year we will elect the only "elected" member of our City Council. That is because this year two very qualified candidates living in the southern end of Punta Gorda have volunteered to stand for City Council. Why do you ask will he or she be the only elected member of our Council? This is because in years past when seats were open, in each case only one volunteer stepped up to run for the seat and was therefore given the position election-free. How and why we must change this is a subject for another blog, but given that in this election we can exercise our voting privilege and both honor these two amazing people who have been spending weeks educating our citizens about themselves and where they stand on issues and most importantly help get the best leadership for our City, it's our responsibility to do so.
If you haven't met and listened to Charlie Council and Nancy Prafke, both Burnt Store Isles residents, you can do so tomorrow at the Punta Gorda Civic Association Building on Shreve. I have also provided a brief summary about them with links to their websites and other opportunities to hear them speak on the issues on another post at http://www.youbelonginpuntagordablog.com/2013/09/punta-gorda-to-elect-new-council-member.html.
Don't assume you know these people -- go to one of the events or at least read their websites and get to know where they stand -- both also have Facebook pages. And then vote. If you care about where you have decided to make your home, it's important that you vote and vote with knowledge of for whom you are voting. Take the time, and then either vote by mail or vote in person on November 5. The City has provided all the information you need on how to vote by mail or in person at http://www.ci.punta-gorda.fl.us/userdata/cityclerk/websiteinformationrevised.pdf.
