Punta Gorda Remembers -- Memorial Day Ceremonies

Originally labelled Decoration Day, the annual commemoration to honor Americans who gave their lives to preserve the values on which our country was founded began right after the Civil War. In towns throughout the states people decorated the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers and flags (hence Decoration Day). The day ultimately evolved to become Memorial Day and was officially changed in 1971 to the last Monday in May by Congress.

Today following a tradition started almost 150 years ago, Punta Gorda will honor those who died defending our country. Ceremonies include:

  • W. Retta Esplanade, Punta Gorda... 1 mile "Honor Walk" the inaugural Veterans Run

  •  Annual Memorial Day Ceremony by the Military Heritage Museum at Fishville starting with patriotic music from Charlotte High Symphonic Band at 11:00 a.m. followed by a program title "Future of the Nation" at noon.  A reception follows at the  Museum.

  • Memorial Day service to honor veterans at 11 a.m. at Laishley Park by the Charlotte County Veteran's Council.
