Having watched the masters in Italy create astounding works of art using chalk, I am intrigued by the Punta Gorda Chamber's notice that students from local schools have been invited to create masterpieces in chalk which will be on display at several downtown locations during Gallery Walk. Finished products and in-process works will be on exhibit at several locations.
Chalk painting originated in 16th century Renaissance Italy when artists began transforming asphalt into canvas using chalk. The artists were called “madonnari,” after the practice of recreating chalk paintings of the Madonna. With World War II and the many hardships it brought, the chalk painting ceased and was not officially brought back to life until 1972. Today, artists worldwide are using new ideas, techniques, and excitement for this ancient form of expression. Contemporary paintings are often complicated images of traditional master-style works, modern pieces, and surreal chalk art creations.
