Downtown Punta Gorda was a tapestry of color in a bazaar filled with music, food and festivities Saturday afternoon at the 23rd Annual Punta Gorda Block Party. Arriving at about 2:30 we were able to get a good standing position for Jim Morris and the Bamboo Band.
Right before the band came on, the announcer noted that it was the first time that Morris and his group were taking the main stage. Morris wowed the crowed filled with Parrot Heads and plain ole Jim Morris lovers with favorite renditions including "The Floating Opera," "No Beer Today," and "Nav-A-Gator Afternoon". When he broke into "Twenty Dollar Bills" the audience responded with throwing bills onto the stage to be given to the local shoe drive for kids.
The Boogiemen followed Morris with their southern country rock sound that had the whole party up dancing. While on the East Stage a Reggie Band, Democracy, whaled out Bob Marley hits.
We managed to put away a few beers, a crab cake sandwich, fries, kettle corn-- and there was a lot more to choose from--before heading out and catching a dance to the Yard Dogs as we left for the day.
