One of the first places I visited when I moved to Punta Gorda was the Celtic Ray... it was then a charming little Irish pub... with Irish grub and a great selection of brews. At the time..Kevin the owner talked about extending the Ray to the attached building ( the larger structure right next store that you can see in the picture above) -- an old Cigar factory so that he could have a larger stage for the Irish entertainment he brought to Punta Gorda.
Years past... a hurricane hit...and other difficulties.. Kevin losing the place in the midst of it and ultimately returning about a year ago to reestablish what was sadly dying in his absence -- a convivial local pub with a real Irish accent.
This weekend on the 14th anniversary of Kevin's opening the Ray... there will be a celebration of what has become a Punta Gorda landmark... it will also be a fundraiser where bartenders are donating their tips, and there will be jars where you can donate to the fund to help renovate this old building and create a terrific new venue for Irish entertainment in town. All proceeds for teeshirt sales and Hurricane Charley DVDs will go to the effort.
The Celtic Clan, the house band for the Black Rose Pub, a landmark in Boston’s Fanuil Hall-Quincy Market district, will be performing at 2 p.m and 7 p.m. playing a mix including U2,Van Morrison, he Chieftains, Clancy Brothers, Wolfe Tones and all your favourite sing-alongs.
The event starts at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
