Run don't walk and see the last performance of the Charlotte High School production of Shrek, the Musical, this afternoon. We saw it last night and it was mind-blowing. The kids of Charlotte High are without doubt some of the most talented in the Country. Daulton Lunsford's booming voice with strong Scottish lilt and curmudgenous attitude with just the right touch of humor and warmth makes for an incredibly likable Shrek. It's hard to believe that the actor/singer behind the green paint and costume is only sixteen years old.
Sara Hart as Fiona is equally winning. Her very adorable comedic presence on stage and lovely singing and speaking voice wins over the audience from the start. If Sara and Daulton weren't so talented in their respective roles, it would have probably been Terrence Barkdale as the annoying Donkey who would have stolen the show. His terribly funny performance and Michael Jackson-style dance moves captivated the audience who clapped wildly at his antics and dancing several times. Bailey Tietsworth also captured the nasty Lord Farquaad perfectly crawling on his knees with little fake legs dangling in front of him during the length of the show. With the constant toss of his fake locks, just the right vocal tone and other mannerisms, he locked in the haughtiness of his character.
The parade of characters from childhood stories singing and dancing their hearts out and costumes and sets that rival any professional production make this a show not to miss. The dragon, her handlers and her outstanding voice, Tai Blake, are astounding.
The plot with which you are likely to be familiar from the animated film of the same title is about a lovable ogre named Shrek whose lonely life in a marsh is disrupted by the intrusion of characters from fairy tales and other kid's stories. Pinocchio, Humpty Dumpty, the Three Little Pigs, Three Blind etc. The nasty Lord Farquaad banished them from his perfect town, Duloc, to the marsh. They send Shrek on a mission to get them back to their home. Farquaad tells Shrek he can have the marsh to if he'll take on a mission to rescue a princess who's imprisoned and guarded by dragon. On the mission with the Donkey going along he manages to rescue and then fall in love with Fiona, the Princess.
The very last performance of this enchanting show is today. Make every effort to go see it. There are tickets left. You will not regret it. You will feel part of a community, your community of kids and their supporting adults who have brought something wonderful to our town. Shrek -- you will be missed. (Many of the students are graduating this year and it will be their very last performance so this one is sure to be special.)
