Back after Hurricane Charley hit Punta Gorda two gentlemen of the City contributed in the formation of an organization (Team Punta Gorda) that ultimately led to what we now see around us.
One, Harvey Goldberg, was elected to the Punta Gorda City Council and became the City's Vice Mayor and then Mayor (2009-2011). Harvey, who served as a Marine, retired to Punta Gorda after many years as a business executive with AT&T. He has worked over the past decade plus to help make Punta Gorda one of the best small towns in America.
The other, Charles Wallace, came to Punta Gorda in 2001, and shortly thereafter built (with a partner) the City's signature restaurant, River City Grill. When Hurricane Charley struck, Charles opened the restaurant's pantries and cooked food for Hurricane-weary, hungry citizens. He worked to help form Team Punta Gorda, which mobilized the citizentry to rebuilt and revitalize the City, and in 2006 was elected to the City Council.
This Wednesday Oct 17th will be Harvey Goldberg's and Charles Wallace's last council meeting. They have both served on the City Council for 6 years, and will be recognized and thanked for that service at the beginning of the City Council meeting Wednesday 9 a.m. Punta Gordans have been invited by current Mayor Bill Albers to come and wish them well.
