Media in Punta Gorda Today to Test out Dragon Boats

The Dragon Boats are coming to Punta Gorda next month on the 14th of April for the 2nd Annual Punta Gorda Dragon Boat Festival, and as a prelude to the event TV crew from Wink News and Fox4, as well as numerous print and electronic journalists gathered near Laishley's main boat  ramp to hear and see more about dragon boat racing and even try paddling in one themselves.

While John Wright, President of the Chamber, and Rachel Keesling, City Council Member, didn't actually try out a boat, they were there to discuss the event that is expected to draw thousands of visitors to Punta Gorda to watch over 30 teams from across Florida (including many local Punta Gorda participants) battle it out on the Peace with around 1000 paddlers competing.

John Wright and Rachel Keesling are interviewed.

Media members had a chance to sit in the official boat of the Draggin Dragons Team, which is the Dragon Boat team of the Charlotte Harbor Paddlers (a local group that provides instruction and coaching for small boat paddling).   Brenda Barbosa (Charlotte Sun Reporter) (below) was among those who received a lesson in this unique sport.

Also being interviewed by Wink today about a newer paddle team that includes women who have survived breast cancer was Alice Walker of the "Peace Makers" team.   (More on the Peace Makers to come in a future post.)

Jennifer Huber, Tourism Public Relations Manager, of the Charlotte Harbor Visitor and Convention Bureau, did a great job in getting a media turnout in anticipation of this Punta Gorda event two weeks from today.   Dragon Racing will start at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 14 near  Laishley Marina.
