It was a long night at the Court House waiting for the last ballots to arrive from the western part of the county. Likely winners, given early tallies of absentee voters and early voting mingled with press and supporters waiting for the final white result sheets to appear. Around 10:15 the final results were in: 25,059 Charlotte citizens had voted out of 112,461 registered voters, 10,768 voting yesterday, a brisk turnout for the one day, and Charlotte County had spoken with some changes definitely wanted.
In the end, Charlotte County Republicans (17219 of the voters) selected Tricia Duffy, incumbent, and Ken Doherty to run in November against write-ins and Bill Truex to stand against a Democratic opponent in the November election. Bob Starr and Robert Skidmore, current County Commissioners were defeated. Ms. Duffy was the only standing commissioner of the three on the ballot that prevailed.
And there is a new Sheriff in town, Bill Prummell, currently Captain in the Sheriff's office, won the election for Sheriff. Despite all candidates being Republicans, because the election was not closed by a bogus write-in all of the Charlotte County voters were able to participate in this race.
In the very contentious Paul Polk/John Perez race for Property Appraiser, Polk won by a landslide taking 67% of the vote.
In other races:
Connie Mack won the nomination to run against Ben Nelson in November for the US Senate.
Tom Rooney won re-election to the new District 17 U.S. Congressional Seat.
Vickie Potts won over Mark Zehr to continue as Tax Collector.
Paul Stamoulis will continue as Supervisor of Elections beating out Adam Cummings, Kevin DeVries and James Paul Hale.
Lindsey Harrington and Jane Sturges will continue as State Committee Persons.
Circuit Judge wins were Karen Miller, Joe Foster, Lisa Porter and George Richards
Bob Segur won the School Board Member District 3 Seat
