The little white owl that lives at the Peace River Wildlife Center is loved by all who visit the bird rescue center in Ponce Park. He’s a male leucistic screech owl. Leucism is a genetic mutation that blocks melanin pigment in a bird’s feathers.
Luna was brought to the Center by a hiker who found him near the Charlotte Harbor Environmental Center on Burnt Store Road. Luna won’t survive in a natural habitat because he has no camouflaging ability so he will live out his years at the Peace River Wildlife Center.
Luna got his feminine name because volunteers initially thought him a female. Regardless of gender, Luna gets a lot of love both from volunteers at the Center and the many visitors that come to see him and other beautiful birds being cared for there.
Here's our valentine to Luna.
