Classes at the Renaissance Academy in Punta Gorda Next Week

One of the things that drew me to Punta Gorda was the continuing education opportunities, e.g.,  a local community college and a visual arts center offering classes.  The Renaissance Academy at the Herald Court Center extends those opportunities even further.  Here is what is on their agenda next week.

Textural Painting Techniques
(5 sessions)

Mondays, January 10,17,24,31 and February 7,2011 9:00-11:00 a.m.
Join artist Jill Park in exploring the Textural Painting Techniques of Australia's Aboriginal Western Desert Art Movement of the 1970's.  The genre employs bird's eye views of landscapes and x-ray-like images and fauna to emphasize the Aboriginal reverence for life and nature.  Using "gesso" (plaster of Paris and glue mixture) on canvas as a base, you will create imprints with stencils and combs. Finally, you will apply an acrylic wash to dry "gesso" before painting your piece.

HC0129 Women of Saudi Arabia
Monday, January 10, 2011   2:30 - 4:00 p.m.

Although women now make up more than half of all graduates from Saudi universities, they comprise only 5% of the kingdom's workforce.  They cannot vote, take an open and active part of public life or even drive a car.  The Abaya, a long black garment, should be worn over clothing everywhere in Saudi Arabia.  All Saudi women cover their head and face in addition to wearing the Abaya.  How can an expatriate woman adjust to life in Saudi Arabia?  Hear Brigitte's experience and see an example of Saudi women's clothing.
