The opening sounds of "Mas Que Nada" are familiar to those of us growing up in the 60s who were lured in by the melodic rhythms of a band called Brasil 66 with its heart-pounding, enticing bosa nova beat. More recently the song Sergio Mendes made popular over 45 years ago was updated by Mendes with hip-hop artists, Black-Eyed Peas. This newest rendition which has been incorporated into commercials in Brazil along with the recently renewed popularity of the Brazilian sound around the world as well as participation in an Academy Awarding winning animated film have brought Mr. Mendes and his memorable song back into the limelight.
The composer and original performer of the song was actually a Brazilian legend named Jorge Ben, who played in a band with Mendes. In Brazil, it's Ben’s version that is considered the standard. Here in America, it is certainly one of Mendes’ versions.
Mas Que Nada is Portuguese, not Spanish, and is a colloquial expression that can be loosely translated as something like "no way." It's what we might have said a few years ago if John Wright, Chamber President, had told us then that Sergio Mendes was going to perform in Punta Gorda. But yes way, Sergio Mendes will be here Saturday for the Punta Gorda Wine and Jazz Festival along with Rick Braun and Richard Elliott. Gates open at 12:30. (Sunday Mindi Abair performs.) For more information on the Festival and to check ticket availability, visit the the Punta Gorda chamber's site.
